“Nancy provided invaluable guidance to our seniors both in terms of their material preparation, interpretation and style and with knowledge of the NY professional world... she utilized a very hands-on technique to bring out the actor’s connection with the material that was amazingly effective even with some of the most difficult students.”

-Jay Berkow, Director of Music Theatre Performance, University of Western Michigan

“I have had the opportunity to work with Nancy not only as a private singing teacher but also as a coach on two productions: A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest, both at The Shakespeare Theatre in Washington DC. In both productions, I worked with her not only one on one but also had the chance to observe her as she worked with the ensemble and other leading players in a group setting. Her ability to see where an actor’s challenges lie, and to provide insightful and practical tools for moving toward freedom in the voice by freeing the breath and the body makes working with her a truly transformative experience. It is amazing to listen to her give individually tailored notes to a dozen actors allowing all of them to improve. It is my professional opinion that what Nancy has as a teacher cannot be learned; it is born of instinct and pursued by passion, built on her enormous talent as a singer and actor and her vast technical expertise, conscientiously applied to facilitating the growth, learning and development of the artist in front her.”

Nancy did a very simple thing. She put her two hands on either side of my spine, right behind my heart, and asked me to lean back, Then, dispensing with the blocking but simply looking into Miranda’s eyes, she asked me to speak the scene. She never let go of me, and I think that is what is key from every teacher. Never let go, but guide. And she never let me down.I was amazed and even slightly embarrassed to realize that after spending 4 years and tens of thousands of dollars on undergraduate and graduate studies in acting and after 20 years of playing leading roles in plays around the country from Shakespeare to modern classics, Nancy, in 30 minutes, taught me more than all those years and dollars about how to practically apply my training and get the most out of my understanding of my character by accessing the true heart of the human I was portraying...The care and kindness with which she delivers her very incisive observations makes her an ideal teacher for students making that vital transition from the training to the profession.

Fortunately for all of us, Nancy turned out to be exactly what we needed. Her energy, encouragement, and personal attention to each individual cast member was constant throughout rehearsals and performances. Nancy exhibited an impressive ability to help every cast member—regardless of skill level—to come out of his or her shell and step up performance abilities. Her flexibility to accommodate different skill levels was particularly notable while teaching the company a number that she choreographed for the production, and she was always willing to listen to input from cast members to help make things more manageable for everyone...I walked into Nancy’s master class with zero confidence and no idea how to control my voice, and I walked out with a confidence level I had never dreamed of and tips and tricks up my sleeve that continue to help me every day.

"I have taught alongside Nancy, music directed for her, and even been taught by her. And, I am always in a state of astonishment at her ability to make students better. Nancy has a rare gift to teach at the highest imaginable level. Her exercises and ideas don’t feel pedagogically excessive nor do they resemble ivory tower acting methods. Instead, they are personal, practical, purposeful, organic, fun, and thrilling in their effectiveness. Her ideas come straight from her tremendous instincts and great wisdom. She somehow has an innate sense of what each individual performer will need and creates spontaneous exercises that pinpoint how to help them grow."
